| The
Mayo U14 Hurling School of Excellence program got underway last week
as forty young hurlers from around the county were put through their
paces by some top hurling coaches at the Ballyheane Hurling Grounds.
The highlight of activities was a days coaching session from Clare
hurler and double All-Ireland winner Jamesie O'Connor. Jamesie, who
retired from inter-county hurling last season, is currently manager
of the Clare minor hurlers and is also manager of the St. Flannan's
of Ennis Harty Cup team, where he teaches. During the session, Jamesie
was quick to pass on tips on how to speed up a young players game,
as well as helping competitors with their technique and balance. In
his lighthearted manner, he also passed on stories of the Clare hurler's
success in the mid nineties under the management of Ger Loughnane.
Other
guest coaches during the weeks activities included Gerry Spellman
- Manager of the Mayo Senior Hurlers - and John Tobin, who gave
a wonderful session on the development of a young hurlers speed
agility and quickness.
