Hot
on the heels of last weekends win over Louth, the Mayo Senior Hurlers
are in action against Monaghan on Saturday next, in this rescheduled
fixture
due to the Mayo footballers involvement in the NFL semi final on
Sunday.
With the Division 3 race coming to a head, this is a crucial tie
for Mayo,
as a defeat would put them out of contention for the Division 3
Final, which
will be contested by the eventual table toppers.
Monaghan
went down last week to Armagh by 2-7 to 0-8 and will know that a
second defeat will bring their interest in the league to an end.
The last
time these sides met was in April 2003 with Mayo winning on a scoreline
of
1-14 to 0-4. However, Monaghan have been producing some fine underage
hurlers in recent years and will be no pushover for the Connaught
men.
The
availablitlity of chief marksman Keith Higgins will be in doubt
for this
fixture, as the Ballyhaunis clubman is expected to be named in Mayo's
starting fifteen for the football semi final against Armagh. Nevertheless,
Mayo's main attacking threat will come from the Broderick brothers,
Paul and
Stephen as well as Derek McConn, Adrian Freeman and Kenneth Robinson.
Pierse
Higgins, who has been out of action in recent weeks due to a back
injury is
also expected to return as is Belmullet clubman Andrew Howard.
