The
Tooreen U-16 Hurlers had an impressive win over Sligo Champions
Coolera-Strandhill in this Connacht Club Quarter Final played in
Tubbercurry on Sunday afternoon last. Some fine point taking, especially
in the final twenty minutes of the game put a large margin between
these sides, as the Coolera challenge wilted halfway through the
closing period.
A first minute goal from Tooreen full forward John Crinnegan set
Tooreen's wheel's in motion, and this was complimented by further
points from Kenny Feeney (three frees), Daniel Jordan, Joey Ganley
(two), Ciaran Charlton, aswell as another point from Crinnegan just
before half time. Coolera's solitary point in the opening half came
in the 5th minute of the game when Ciaran Brenan converted from
the dead ball, as Coolera found it quite difficult playing into
the stiff breeze. This left the score at 1-8 to 0-1 at half time,
in favour of the East Mayo outfit.
The opening stages of the second half saw Coolera come back into
the game, indiscipline by Tooreen was punished by Conor O'Mahoney
and Keelan Cawley (two converted frees each) to give the Sligo lads
a lifeline. These fine long range frees, along with Donal Tobins
strike to the Tooreen net from close range, brought Coolera back
to within three points of Tooreen with 20 minutes of the game remaining.
However, the introduction of Tooreen substitute Paul Lawless to
the their attack saw much improvement up front, with Lawless, Kenny
Feeney (2), John Crinnegan all scoring points before the game was
put beyond doubt after a rangy run and goal by Tooreen scorer in
chief Kenny Feeney. Alan Freeman then got in on the scoring for
Tooreen as he converted from long range following some good approach
play by Michael Morley, before 13-year-old Lawless bagged his first
of two goals in the 46th minute.
Tooreen now go forward to play Roscommon Champions Four Roads in
the Connacht Semi Final.
