The
Castlebar Mitchell's U12 hurlers were in goalscoring form on Sunday
evening last as they powered home to a convincing win over Ballyhaunis
in the Division 1 U-12 Hurling League final. Six goals in the opening
half set up the platform for a comfortable win for the Mitchell's
but to their credit, galant runners-up Ballyhaunis battled hard
to the bitter end.
Played in the splendid surface of the Ballyvary Community Pitch,
the Mitchell's side powered by the midfield pairing of Nicholas
Quinn and captain Tony Sweeney got off to a splendid start with
goals from Kevin Keena and Ryan McGuire within the opening five
minutes. As Castlebar piled on the opening half pressure, further
goals from Tony Sweeney and Jamie Redmond were recorded before Ballyhaunis
opened their account with a point from a free from Gearoid Keane.
The second half was a much more even affair as the East Mayo lads
rallied to score goals from Gearoid Keane and Patrick Kiely but
the Mitchell's were always in full control with centre back Dara
O'Malley rounding off a fine personal performance right on full
time as he finished a solo effort to the Ballyhaunis net.
After the game Adrian Hession - on behalf of the Mayo Hurling Committee
- presented the Dave Sinnott Memorial Cup to Tony Sweeney, captain
of the successful Castlebar Mitchell's side.
