Cois
Farraige, the underage section of the Westport Hurling Club, took
this County Minor B Hurling Title in style on Sunday morning last,
as they cruised to a 14 point victory over Belmullet in Bofeenaun.
Star of th show was Westport corner forward Declan Gallagher, who
recorded 5-4 of his sides total, which ultimately was the difference
between the sides.
Playing with the aid of a strong breeze in the opening period, Westport,
led up front by Gallagher, registered 4-5 without reply. Other points
in this half came from Christy Butler and Colm Monahan, as Belmullet
found it increasingly difficult in the blustery conditions. Gallaghers
goals in this half came from an array of angles as he made full
use of the space of the two man full-forward line in the 13-a-side
formation.
Belmullet to their credit battled back well in the second half and
points from John Reilly and Ger Barrett got the Erris lads going.
However, Westport points from Shane Keane, Eoin Madigan (2) aswell
as Gallaghers fifth goal of the game, kept their side well in front.
Belmullet finished the game the stronger however with midfielder
Ciaran Barrett scoring 2-2 in the closing ten minutes of the game.
After the game, Luke Fitzmaurice - Chairman of the Mayo Hurling
Committee, presented the Minor B Hurling Shield to Brian Higgins,
captain of the Cois Farraige side.
