Mayo Hurling Manager Steps Down

"After three years in charge of the Mayo Senior Hurling Panel, Gerry Spellman, along witht his backroom team of Sean O'Coisdealbha and Fr Michael Murphy have stepped down from the position, after Mayo's victory over Derry in the Christy Ring Cup Relegation Final in Sligo on Saturday last. Spellman, who is a native of Clarinbridge in Galway, took up the post in February 2003 and in his opening season guided Mayo to a NHL Division 3 Title along with an All-Ireland Junior Title. In the following year, Mayo were subsequently relegated from the NHL Division 2 but bounced back however to reach the All-Ireland Senior B Final in which Mayo were defeated by Kildare in Croke Park. This was the first Mayo Senior Hurling Team to play on the hallowed turf. In Spellman's final year in charge, he has guided Mayo back to Division 2 with his second NHL Division 3 Title and has also kept Mayo in the Christy Ring Tier 2 Championship for 2006. Along the way, Spellman also guided Mayo to two Connacht Junior Titles and two Connacht U-21B Title's."
