The
Mayo U-16 Hurlers were in impressive form on Friday evening last
as they brushed aside the challenge of Sligo in this U-16 C Regional
Final played in Charlestown. Although the score line may suggest
a comfortable victory for the Mayo lads, it took a Kenny Feeney
goal in the 42nd minute of the game to put the result beyond doubt.
The
opening half saw an equal share of the play, with Sligo points from
Conor O'Mahoney keeping the Yeat's boys ticking over nicely. However,
Mayo went in at the interval 0-6 to 0-4 in front thanks to points
from Stephen Hoban (2), Declan Gallagher (2), Kenny Feeney and Cathal
Freeman.
On
the resumption Mayo's extra guile began to show through, and a string
of points from play from Gallagher again, Kenny Feeney, Eoin Madigan
and Cathal Freeman were eventually complimented were eventually
complimented by a fine goal finish from corner forward Feeney. Sligo,
to their credit, never stopped battling throughout, with their strongest
performances coming from Keelan Cawley, Conor O'Mahoney, Ciaran
Brennan and goalkeeper Barry O'Mahoney.
The
closing ten minutes saw Mayo consolidate their superiority with
points from Joe Ganley (2), Declan Gallagher (who finished with
0-5) and Cathal Freeman with Mayo's final point of the game coming
from substitute Ger Barrett. Mayo now face the winners of the Ulster
Section in the All-Ireland final in the coming weeks.
