The
Tooreen U14 Hurlers enjoyed a memorable weekend at Feile na nGael
in Cork, coming up just short of qualifying for the knockout stages
in the Division 4 competition. The weekends activities commenced
on Friday evening as Tooreen faced their hosts, Kilbrittain Hurling
Club in their opening encounter. Alas, the long journey to Cork
took its toal, as the homeside ran out deserved winners on a scoreline
of 4-8 to 1-5. The Tooreen goal was scored by full-forward Stephan
Cummins.
Saturday
morning saw a rejuvenated Tooreen team take the field as they faced
the famously named Sam McGuires Hurling Club from Dunmanway in their
second round-robin game. Tooreen, backed by the return to action
of Michael Morley from holidays that morning, and the skillful Ciaran
Charlton dug deep to grind out a 1-6 to 0-4 win against the Cork
side. The Tooreen goal in this game was scored by Paul Lawless.
Saturday
afternoon saw the Tooreen lads improve even more, as they ammassed
a 1-12 to 1-1 win against Tyrone champions Carrickmore. In this
game, Tooreen totally dominated their oponents, with gallant displays
again from Paul Lawless, who recorded five points from play, defender
Mark Waldron and goalscorer Stephen Cummins. Alas, these victories
were not sufficient to qualify to the knockout stages of the competition
and so saw the end of another years participation at the country's
largest club hurling tournament.
Aswell
as the panel of 25 players, the Tooreen travelling party consisted
of Paul Hunt, Jackie Coyne, Michael Douglas, Liam Walsh, Tom Jordan,
Timmy Ganley, Pete Finn and Adrian Hession along with many parents
and supporters who made the six hour journey to support the side.
