The
U-14 hurlers of Castlebar Mitchell's booked their place as Mayo's
representatives in Division 2 of the All-Ireland Feile na nGael
championships in Cork in June with this spirited and hard grafted
win over Tooreen at Ballyheane Hurling Grounds on Saturday last.
In the fifteen minute a half game, scores were hard to come by as
defences were on top, but a Michael Cloone pointed free in extra
time was enough to help the Mitchell's to the title.
An
early goal in the second minute from full forward Luke McGrath gave
Castlebar the perfect start, but pointed replies from Michael Morley,
Ciaran Charlton and Niall Freeman pulled Tooreen right back into
contention before half time. The second half saw a series of missed
chances by both sides aswell as some resolute defending especially
from Tooreen defenders Mark Waldron, Iarla Carty and Conor Henry,
as the East Mayo lads just held on for a draw at 0-3 to 1-0.
Extra
time of five minutes a half was then played with the only score
recorded in extra time coming from Castlebars Michael Cloone. This
was enough to see his side through, eventhough Tooreen drove forward
late-on looking for a winner, but were denied on numerous occasions
by Castlebar goalkeeper John Cotter.
After
the game, John Hopkins - Secretary of the Mayo Hurling Board - presented
the Feile na nGael Shield to Stephen FitzGerald, captain of the
successful Castlebar team.
