Westport on Course to Retain Genfitt Title

Westport 1-11
Tooreen 2-04

The Westport Senior Hurlers are on course to retain the Genfitt Senior Hurling League this year, after this spirited and gutsy win over Tooreen in Balla on Saturday evening last.

A strong first half display, which saw Westport go in at the break 0-7 to 0-2 in front, laid the foundation for this Westport victory. Points in this half from Sean Reilly (2), Paul Broderick and Dermot Tiernan from frees kept Westport well in front with Tooreen's replies both coming from the dead ball from Stephen Hunt.

Tooreen were given a lifeline at the start of the second period when Brian Delaney was on hand to finish to the Westport net, but within minutes Westport replied with a goal of their own when the rangy Paul Broderick netted after a fine catch on the edge of the square. The East Mayo side threw everything forward in the closing stages of the game and were rewarded when Kenneth Robinson was on hand to find the net to put just two points between the teams. However, Westport finished strongest and two points in injury time from midfielders James Hogan and Stephen Gallagher gave Westport a deserved four-point victory.

Best for Westport in this clash were Anthony Kearney and Ger Corcoran in defence, while James Hogan, Sean Reilly, Paul Broderick and Dermot Tiernan were most influential in attack. Tooreen's best performances came in their defence with Justin Freyne, Stephen Leneghan and Stephen Hunt all putting in good performances while Brian Delaney posed the main threat in the attack. Westport now progress to play the winners of the Ballyhaunis-Belmullet tie in the final.
