Mayo
v Donegal
on Sun 1st May in Markievicz Park, Sligo at 3.30.
Ref: J. O'Rourke (Monaghan)
After
last weeks no show from the Tyrone Hurlers in Ballina, the scene
is now set for a showdown between the two most consistant performers
in this years National Hurling League Division 3 campaign - Mayo
and Donegal. Results elsewhere in the League means that Mayo go
straight to this final without having to play Tyrone in a refixture.
At
first glance, many may feel that Donegal will pose little threat
to Mayo in this final, but on closer inspection, Mayo's only loss
in this years campaign came at the hands of the Northerners in Round
5 in Letterkenny. Even though Mayo had allready qualified for Series
2 going into that tie, Donegal were on fire and blitzed Mayo by
4-15 to 3-15 in a very open game. That win put Donegal forward into
the top half of Series 2 and since then they havent looked back.
Wins over Monaghan, Louth and Tyrone have seen Donegal accumulate
14-31 in the process, with Kevin Campbell and Danny Cullen being
their chief goalgetters.
Mayo
go into this game with a clean bill of health and will be boosted
also with the return of Keith Higgins from football duty. His brother
Pierse is also recovering from weeks on the treatment table and
will be expected to feature at some stage in this final. The Mayo
backline picks itself with Derek Walsh, John Duffy, Shane Morley,
Stephen Coyne, Paddy Barrett and Ger Whyte filling jerseys 2 to
7 respectively. Midfield will more than likely be manned by Con
Ryan and Kevin Healy while up front the return of Keith Higgins
may see a reshuffle with one from Kenneth Robinson, Derek McConn
or Paul Broderick dropping to the bench. Stephen Broderick, James
Hogan and Adrian Freeman have been in top scoring form of late and
more of the same will be expected if Mayo are to lift the NHL Division
3 Title for the second time in three years.
