BANK OF IRELAND CONNACHT SFC SEMI-FINAL:
Mayo 1-16 Roscommon 0-11

Last year's beaten All-Ireland finalists Mayo progressed to a Bank of Ireland Connacht final meeting against old rivals Galway after a comprehensive 1-16 to 0-11 victory over Roscommon at a sun-drenched Dr Hyde Park on Sunday.

For much of the opening half the home side were well in contention, but a goal by elusive Mayo corner forward Conor Mortimer a minute into injury time swung the tie in his side's favour. That score left the Westerners four points to the good with wind advantage to come in the second half.

Still, Roscommon matched their opponents for the third quarter but they failed to score for the final 16 minutes of the contest, and Mayo found their range without too much difficulty to run out convincing winners.

Mayo were very sluggish early on with a great deal of complacency evident in their play. On the other hand, Roscommon were eager to impress with Ger Heneghan and wing back Mike Ryan giving the home side an early advantage.

Yet, Mayo were always able to match Roscommon's greater desire with Billy Joe Padden and Andy Moran looking lively in there forward line.

Even though they trailed by two points at one stage, John Maughan's side found scores much easier to come by and the brace by Conor Mortimer left the sides level 0-5 apiece entering first-half injury time.

Things got better for the favourites when Padden's good work was rewarded by Conor Mortimer's quick thinking and he fisted the full forward's cross-field delivery into an empty net.

Both sides kicked some good scores from play in the third quarter, but Roscommon's nagging tendency to give away possession cheaply cost them dearly. Andy Moran, Padden and influential substitute James Gill added easy points as Heneghan, Francie Grehan and substitute Jonathan Dunning kicked good scores to keep Roscommon in touch.

However, they could never get close enough to their opponents to make matters more interesting. In the end Mayo won pulling up as Roscommon simply ran out of steam. Ciaran McDonald and the Mortimer brothers found their range once again as Mayo advance to another provincial decider against Galway.

Understandably Mayo boss John Maughan was content to be contesting another Connacht final. "We were very laboured in our play early on but I always knew that we would be okay once we racked up the scores. But we must improve before the Galway game."

Roscommon boss Val Daly reckoned his side showed plenty of grit and determination, but ultimately ran out of steam. "We gave a decent account of ourselves but we definitely struggled before the end."
