The
Mayo GAA Hurling Board caters for teams from Senior,
all the way down to U-14. The Senior team play out of
Division 3 of the National Hurling League, but will
play in the Tier 2 All-Ireland Hurling Championship
(Christy Ring Cup) in 2005. The team is managed by Gerry
Spellman, a native of Clarinbridge, Co Galway, with
the help of selectors Fr. Michael Murphy (Castlebar)
and Sean O'Coisdealbha (Belmullet). Players are drawn
from the six adult hurling clubs in Mayo. They are Tooreen,
Ballyhaunis, Westport, Ballina, Castlebar and Belmullet.
The county U-21 hurlers play in the All-Ireland U-21B
Championship. Mayo have been very successful in Connacht
in previous years, having won the last three titles,
but an All-Ireland title has eluded us. Due to their
being so many U-21's on the Senior Panel, the U-21's
also come under the management of Gerry Spellman, Fr.
Michael Murphy and Sean O'Coisdealbha. As with the Seniors,
players are drawn from the six adult clubs in Mayo.
The
county Minor Hurlers will play in the All-Ireland
C Hurling Championship in 2005. Management has yet
to be finalised for 2005. Championship begins in mid-July.

DEVELOPMENT
PANELS
|
| The
county U-16 hurlers also play in the All-Ireland C Championship.
Last year (2004), Mayo went all the way, claiming the
title in a hard tussle against Armagh. Players for the
county U-16 Development Panel are drawn from the eight
underage hurling clubs in the county. These are Tooreen,
Castlebar, Ballyhaunis, Belmullet, Ballyheane, Westport,
Ballina and Addergoole.
The
U-15 Development Panel is made up of graduates from
the previous years U-14 School of Excellence. Each
year the U-15's travel to Leinster, where they take
part in the Leinster B Development Blitz.
The
U-14 School of Excellence is a young hurlers first
stepping stone in his intercounty development. After
a series of regional trials, forty young hurlers collectively
undergo a series of coaching sessions culminating
in Development challenge matches against other counties.
The School of Excellence is run during the Easter
Holidays annually with challenge games taking place
throughout the year.
